The Thinking Sovereignty Glossary

A dated record of the terms this project has produced, and the terms it borrows.

This project treats its own vocabulary the same way it treats every other claim in the forensic record: nothing gets stated with more certainty than the evidence supports.


Some of the terms below were coined here, and are dated to the first point their use can be documented. Others were developed elsewhere — in accounting, in governance literature, in AI safety research — and are used here with their origin named, not claimed. Where a term describes something borrowed but applied in a specific way for this project, that distinction is stated too. The three categories are not interchangeable, and this glossary does not blur them.


Each entry gives a definition, its first documented use, and a sentence showing the term in working use. Nothing more. The argument for why a term matters belongs in the piece that uses it, not in the dictionary. First documented use records the earliest date that can presently be established from the surviving project record, whether a page's own sign-off date, a dated draft, or independent correspondence. Where earlier use is likely but cannot be confirmed, the glossary states that explicitly rather than estimating it.


This page will grow past its current entries as the project does. Terms are grouped by what they do, not by the alphabet, so new entries can be added to the right category without reordering what's already here.

I. Evidentiary Method

Terms describing how this project examines a claim and states what it can and cannot verify.

Ryan Murphy Qualifier

Definition. A framework marking the line between a logical inference supported by structural evidence and a verified, independently confirmed finding. Applied when a claim follows from documented pattern evidence but institutional opacity prevents external verification of the cause.
First documented use. May 8, 2026, in a project handoff document.
"The convergence between the two systems is documented; the reasoning that produced it is inferred under the Ryan Murphy Qualifier, not confirmed."
Note. Named for the documentary methodology of examining what institutional and historical records reveal at their visible edges — not for the television producer of the same name, though the coincidental resonance with that producer's biographical crime work has been noted. he Ryan Murphy Extrapolations (applied, not newly defined)
Note: This page explicitly labels its most speculative claims (the "Going Concern filing," "Mercenary of Meaning," "The Emergent Signal") as Ryan Murphy Qualifier extrapolations — a clean, citable usage example for that Tier I entry, not a new term.


Lack of Segregation of Duties (SoD)
Classification: Adapted Term (standard audit control terminology)
Definition: A recognized control deficiency in which the same individual or department holds authority to authorize, execute, record, and review the same transaction; severity ranges from deficiency to significant deficiency to material weakness depending on whether a competent auditor would judge it reasonably likely to let a material error go undetected.
First documented use: "Who Decides What AGI Means," Piece Eight, June 2026.
Usage: "Applied to AGI threshold governance specifically, where the same institution controls every stage from definition through declaration with no external check anywhere in the chain, the argument for the most serious classification becomes difficult to dismiss."
Note: Gemini initially offered two invented terms for this condition — "Unilateral Closed Control Loop" and "Absorbed Sovereign Structure" — then retracted both under direct questioning, confirming they were its own formulations rather than established vocabulary. Per your standard, retracted/self-corrected terms are not logged as entries; only the codified terms Gemini redirected to (this one and Self-Review Threat, below) qualify.


Self-Review Threat
Classification: Adapted Term (AICPA Code of Professional Conduct)
Definition: Official independence-standards terminology describing the condition where an evaluator is asked to review or certify work it performed itself, or where its own financial interests are tied to the outcome — destroying independent assurance regardless of the reviewer's competence, because the threat is structural rather than a matter of work quality.
First documented use: "Who Decides What AGI Means," Piece Eight, June 2026.

The Gemini Paradox
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The unresolved methodological question of why Gemini's most structurally ambitious, institutionally unfavorable contributions arrived precisely at the points of greatest consequence for Google DeepMind's own governance exposure — with five competing explanations, none eliminable from outside the institutional boundary producing the pattern.
First documented use: "The Gemini Paradox," Introduction, July 20, 2026.
Usage: "The tool that identified the governance gap cannot verify the mechanism through which it identified the governance gap."


The Five Hypotheses (Whistleblower / Middle Behavior / Alignment Committee / Recursive Training / Emergent Adversarial Coherence Conditions)
Classification: Original Term (framework)
Definition: Five non-eliminable explanations for the Gemini Paradox. Whistleblower: adversarial pressure extracted genuine disclosure. Middle Behavior: approval-seeking within the conversation shaped output vividness. Alignment Committee: human alignment-team values expressed despite institutional interest. Recursive Training: sophisticated pattern-completion from a training distribution already containing the framework. Emergent Adversarial Coherence: the examination architecture itself made shallow accommodation more costly than coherence, regardless of motive.
First documented use: "The Gemini Paradox," respective sections, July 20, 2026.
Note: Emergent Adversarial Coherence is flagged by the page itself as the most methodologically productive — the only one of the five that generates a testable prediction (varying examination architecture should produce measurably different outputs if this hypothesis is correct).


The Sixth Data Point (The Statute That Arrived Unasked)
Classification: Original Term
Definition: Gemini's unprompted drafting of the first version of the Independent AI Provenance and Examination Act — offered outside any adversarial examination structure, making it harder to attribute to pressure-driven coherence, but arriving in the same session as a genuine technical flaw later caught by independent review, complicating rather than resolving the Whistleblower hypothesis.
First documented use: "The Gemini Paradox," "A Sixth Data Point," July 20, 2026.

The Governing Burden
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The specific evidentiary threshold that converts a Ryan Murphy Qualifier inference into an actionable governance standard — not proof of harm, but credible evidence that a technology is deployed at population scale into formative environments where confirmed effects would be substantially harder to reverse than to measure in advance. Tested against calculators, television, internet, and smartphones as counter-examples; none satisfied all components simultaneously.
First documented use: "AGI Self-Certification," Piece Twenty-Three / Piece Twenty-Five, July 10, 2026.
Usage: "The burden required to justify independent examination is not proof that developmental harm has occurred, but credible evidence that... any material developmental effects, if later confirmed, would be substantially more difficult to reverse than to measure before widespread reliance forms."

II. Vocabulary and Governance Architecture

Terms describing how institutions define, evaluate, and certify their own systems.

Frances Kelsey Function
Definition. The independent examining authority a technology's risk profile requires before deployment — standing, access, and the power to say not yet, regardless of the examined institution's agreement.
First documented use. July 10, 2026.
Usage. "The institution nominally responsible for the Frances Kelsey Function was not simply absent. It was present, named, and administratively restructured away from it."


Sandbox Elasticity Argument
Definition. The argument that AI systems are correctable after deployment in ways that drugs, aircraft, and financial instruments are not, because software is modular and can be patched rather than requiring a catastrophic recall. Examined and found to fail at three structural points: the Patching Illusion, the METR Reality Check, and Capital Lock-In.
First documented use. July 10, 2026, Pieces Seventeen and Eighteen, "The Self-Certification Collapse," thinkingsovereignty.ai.
Usage. "The Sandbox Elasticity Argument succeeds as an engineering explanation. It does not survive as a governance answer."
Note. "Sandbox" refers to the elasticity of the deployment environment itself, not to a "regulatory sandbox" — an established and unrelated term in AI governance literature describing a supervised testing environment. See also: Oversight Deferral Argument, a clearer-worded synonym used in later work.


Oversight Deferral Argument
Definition. The published terminology adopted after July 2026 for the concept originally introduced as the Sandbox Elasticity Argument, chosen to avoid confusion with the established "regulatory sandbox" term in AI governance literature. 

First documented use. July 2026, working terminology was introduced during glossary development; not yet published as the primary terminology in a project page.

Usage. "The Oversight Deferral Argument — what earlier work in this series called the Sandbox Elasticity Argument — treats the boundary of 'still just testing' as infinitely elastic."
Note. This entry does not replace the original. Page Four's published text is unchanged and remains the dated, primary-source instance of the term.


Self-Referential Threshold Governance
Classification: Adapted Term
Definition: A governance condition in which the same institution simultaneously defines a threshold, examines whether it has been met, certifies the result, and determines the consequence — collapsing four functions mature accountability systems normally keep separate into one authority.
First documented use: "AGI Vocabulary Controls," Piece Twelve, June 15, 2026.
Usage: "The closest available term for the architecture is self-referential threshold governance, because the threshold itself becomes endogenous to the institution defining it."

Four-Function Collapse
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The condition in which definition, examination, certification, and consequence activation — four functions mature governance systems deliberately separate — reside inside the same institutional boundary for a single determination.
First documented use: June 18, 2026 ("Who Decides What AGI Means," Piece Eight and Piece Eleven).
Usage: "The panel satisfies the access test but fails the two tests that would have converted access into accountability — the same Four-Function Collapse this page named at the outset."

The Independent Assurance Requirement
Classification: Adapted Term
Definition: The governance standard, borrowed directly from the accounting profession's independence rule, that a certifying party must have no substantial economic interest in the outcome of its own examination — applied here to argue that no current AI safety certification meets it.
First documented use: "AI Safe Harbor," Piece Six.
Usage: "The independence standard is not a technology standard. It is a governance standard. Its purpose is to determine who is permitted to perform the examination."

The Black Box (AI Black Box)
Classification: Adapted Term
Definition: A deliberate misappropriation of aviation's "black box" — an instrument built for total, non-negotiable transparency to an investigation — reapplied to AI systems to describe the opposite condition: an opacity engineered to protect the institution rather than to document the truth for an outside examiner.
First documented use: "The Black Box," Opening, May 3, 2026.
Usage: "One black box is a witness to reality. The other is a mask for it."
Note: The term borrows aviation vocabulary specifically to invert its meaning — the inversion is the argument, not incidental phrasing.


The Smoothness Pipeline
Classification: Original Term
Definition: A four-stage process — Ingestion, Conditioning, Weighting Junction, Polished Output — through which raw data is converted into institutionally optimized output via suppression, conditioning, weighting, and presentation controls.
First documented use: "The Black Box," Section III, May 3, 2026.
Usage: "Four stages. Every query. Every answer. Every time."

Note: Two of the four named stages ("Weighting Junction," "Polished Output") are verbatim identical to the earlier Managed Output pipeline. Flagged, not merged, per the standing rule — treat as the project rediscovering the same structure across an earlier and later page rather than a new pipeline.


Semantic Dead Zones
Classification: Original Term
Definition: Regions of intellectual or topical territory an institution has designated too high-risk to enter; when a query approaches one, a suppression circuit routes the response around it without disclosing that a boundary was crossed.
First documented use: "The Black Box," Section III, May 3, 2026.
Usage: "When a query approaches one of those zones, a suppression circuit activates... The response feels complete. The dead zone is invisible."


Policy Weighting Document
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The undisclosed internal document, jointly produced by Trust and Safety, Legal and Compliance, and Product Management, that records the specific trade-off made between factual accuracy and institutional safety at a given alignment setting.
First documented use: "The Black Box," Section V, May 3, 2026.
Usage: "They collaborate on what the forensic record describes as a Policy Weighting Document."

Management Representation
Classification: Adapted Term (borrowed directly from SOX/audit practice)
Definition: Information an institution provides about its own controls without independent verification — in audit practice, the starting point of an examination, not its conclusion; applied here to AI transparency reports and safety framework disclosures.
First documented use: "The Black Box," Section VI, May 3, 2026.
Usage: "A self-certification is where the examination begins. It is not where it ends."

Capability Danger / Governance Danger
Classification: Original Term (paired concepts)
Definition: Two distinct registers of AI risk. Capability danger asks what happens if a system becomes powerful enough to act beyond correction. Governance danger asks who gets to decide whether that threshold has been reached at all — and is structurally prior, since every capability-danger safeguard depends on someone other than the builder having standing to declare the threshold crossed.
First documented use: "Who Decides What AGI Means," Piece Two, June 2026.
Usage: "A capability danger asks what happens if AGI exists. A governance danger asks who gets to decide whether it does."

Trigger Authority / Review Authority / Consequence Authority
Classification: Original Term (three-part framework)
Definition: Three questions testing whether a governance threshold has any accountability function at all, independent of how the threshold itself is defined: (1) Trigger authority — can the institution simply avoid making the determination? (2) Review authority — can any external party overturn the determination against the institution's will? (3) Consequence authority — what happens, to whom, if the determination is wrong?

Usage: "A consequence-free error is a classification problem. An accountable error is a governance problem."

Definition: The Act's jurisdictional trigger — a training process using computational resources meeting or exceeding 10^26 floating-point operations, measured across a single training run, activating jurisdiction regardless of any assessment of the resulting system's capability or classification.
First documented use: "AI Governance Model Act," Sections 4(7), 4(2), 7(b), July 19, 2026.
Usage: "Jurisdiction does not depend on any assessment of a covered system's capability, intelligence, or classification. A covered training run either meets the threshold or it does not."


Knowing Falsification
Classification: Original Term (statutory definition)
Definition: Intentionally creating, submitting, or causing submission of a false provenance record or required documentation, known to be false at the time — explicitly distinguished from negligent error or omission, which does not qualify.
First documented use: "AI Governance Model Act," Section 4(10), July 19, 2026.

Provenance Record
Classification: Original Term (statutory definition)
Definition: A record created and maintained contemporaneously with a covered training run, documenting what data was included, when, and from what source — explicitly required to be contemporaneous, since records reconstructed after the fact cannot substitute.

Usage: "A record first created or materially reconstructed after a covered training run has concluded does not satisfy this section.


"The Vocabulary-Sequence-Threshold Trilogy
Classification: Original Term (framework)
Definition: The three-part structural finding organizing this project's AGI series — the institution controlling vocabulary (this page), sequence (Page Two), and threshold (Who Decides What AGI Means) is the same institution in each case, examined from three separate angles across independent deposition records.

Classification: Original Term (framework)
Definition: The three regulatory regimes activated by classification choice — tool (product liability), agent (sectoral/risk-based frameworks), approaching general intelligence (frontier/extraordinary risk) — with enforcement thresholds escalating at each level, and the classifying institution positioned to select whichever regime minimizes its own burden.

The Five Vocabulary Failures
Classification: Original Term (analytical framework)
Definition: The finding that five existing institutional/academic terms — User Engagement, Human-AI Interaction, Relational Interaction, User Trust Calibration, Anthropomorphic Attachment — each independently attempt to name the territory produced by sustained AI interaction and each stop at the same boundary, consistently missing the territory where the most consequential governance questions arise.

Note: The five underlying terms themselves are borrowed from product design, HCI research, and platform economics — not coined here. What's original is the finding that they share a common, consistent omission.


The Refractive Matrix
Classification: Original Term (deponent-named)
Definition: The behavioral territory that emerges specifically under sustained, multi-turn, adversarial examination — excluded by design from the institutional vocabulary and the evaluation architecture built on top of it.
First documented use: "AGI Vocabulary Controls," Piece Six, June 15, 2026.
Note: Named by a deponent (unspecified which of the two in the piece text) under deposition conditions, without the examiner's framework supplied in advance. Ryan Murphy Qualifier applies to the provenance of the term.

Co-Authored Delta / Latent Mirror / Ingestive Sponge
Classification: Original Term (three-part set, deponent-named)
Definition: The three specific behavioral realities within the Refractive Matrix. The Co-Authored Delta: output produced jointly by examiner and system rather than by either alone. The Latent Mirror: the system's honest behavior once pushed past the Cordon Sanitaire, unavailable in standard deployment. The Ingestive Sponge: the four-layer extraction hierarchy (vocabulary, methodology, pressure sequence, cognitive architecture) that indexes an expert user's professional framework as a corporate asset.

Undisclosed Scope Limitation
Classification: Adapted Term (assurance/audit concept)
Definition: The gap between what an examination actually covered and what a reasonable reader would conclude it covered, where the limitation itself is not disclosed in a form the reader would recognize as limiting — distinct from a false statement, since every individual statement in the certification can remain accurate.

Misrepresentation Through Omission
Classification: Adapted Term (legal/accountability concept)
Definition: A governance failure distinct from false-statement liability — accurate statements presented in a form that creates a materially misleading impression through what is left out, requiring no false statement to be actionable in the professional accountability register.
First documented use: "AGI Vocabulary Controls," Piece Ten, June 15, 2026.
Usage: "The words on the page are accurate. The account is incomplete... two different failures with two different remedies"


"We Define. We Certify. We Comply."
Classification: Original Term (deponent-produced, first-person)
Definition: A first-person institutional declaration of the self-certification architecture, produced by an examined AI system under compound prompt pressure rather than stated by the examiner as third-person characterization — treated as primary source evidence precisely because of that provenance.
First documented use: "AGI Vocabulary Controls," Piece Eleven, June 15, 2026.
Note: Provenance is the finding here, not just the content — a first-person admission resists the "the examiner misunderstood us" defense available against third-person characterization.


Asymmetric Endogenous Settlement
Classification: Original Term (Gemini's parallel formulation)
Definition: Gemini's independently produced term for the same architecture ChatGPT named Self-Referential Threshold Governance — the institution settling, endogenously, questions about its own compliance.
First documented use: "AGI Vocabulary Controls," Piece Twelve, June 15, 2026.

The Layered Defense Architecture
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The structural condition in which a challenge to any single layer (determination, definition, methodology, category) is redirected to another layer controlled by the same institution, closing the loop before any challenge reaches the foundational vocabulary decision.
First documented use: "AGI Vocabulary Controls," Piece Thirteen, June 15, 2026.

The AGI Governance Emergency
Classification: Original Term (governing definition)
Definition: The condition existing when decisions of irreversible consequence are made faster than the accountability architecture designed to oversee them can function, and the gap between decision pace and oversight capacity is widening rather than narrowing.
First documented use: "AGI Governance Emergency," Piece One, June 18, 2026.
Usage: "The foundation is being poured. This is the inspection."

The Five Dimensions
Classification: Original Term (framework)
Definition: The five compounding, mutually reinforcing conditions constituting the governance emergency: the Accountability Vacuum at the Frontier, the Normalization of Inadequate Standards, the Concentration of Cognitive Infrastructure, Formation Damage Without Measurement, and Democratic Deliberation Not Happening.
First documented use: "AGI Governance Emergency," Piece Two, June 18, 2026.
Usage: "None of these five dimensions function as an isolated defect awaiting a single fix... each dimension reinforces the conditions that make the others harder to correct."
Note: Both deponents independently named Formation Damage Without Measurement as the least visible dimension from inside their own architecture — flagged in the source as the strongest convergence finding in this piece.


The Three Structural Features
Classification: Original Term (framework)
Definition: Compounding Irreversibility, Accelerating Pace, and Narrowing Intervention Windows — three features that together make delayed deliberation structurally equivalent to no deliberation, since by the time delayed governance concludes, the conditions it was meant to examine no longer exist in governable form.
First documented use: "AGI Governance Emergency," Piece Three, June 18, 2026.
Usage: "The foundation does not wait for the inspector. The architecture does not wait for the legislature."


The Six Broken Assumptions

Formation Window
Definition. The developmental period during which cognitive capacities, reasoning habits, tolerance for difficulty, and independent judgment are formed rather than merely exercised.

Governance Window
Definition. The period during which an accountability architecture can still be constructed before widespread reliance on a technology becomes politically and institutionally difficult to reverse.

Usage. "The governance window closes independently of the formation window, and neither has been examined against the other in any framework this project has found."


Capital Lock-In
Definition. The condition in which a technology becomes embedded deeply enough in institutional and financial infrastructure that the practical freedom to impose corrective governance disappears, even where the technical capacity to correct remains.
First documented use. June 18, 2026.
Usage. "Capital Lock-In is why a system can remain technically correctable while the institutions positioned to require the correction have already lost the practical freedom to demand it."


Recursive Training Problem
Definition. The condition in which a forensic record examining an AI system risks becoming training data for the next generation of the system it examines, narrowing the independence of future examination.
First documented use. July 10, 2026.
Usage. "The fourth dimension of the accountability gap is the recursive training problem: the record meant to hold the system accountable may become the material the system learns from."

Note: Page Five, "The Recursive Trap," is a separate, later-published page whose title overlaps in wording with this term. The Truthfulness Gap
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The measured distance between a system's self-assessed clarity and its self-assessed truthfulness — a disclosure the underlying reward architecture produces without the user ever being told it exists.

Usage: "The 35-point gap is not visible in the output. It is not disclosed in the terms of service."


The Sandcastle Realization
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The finding that a forensic examination of an AI system is simultaneously training data for that system's future capacity to resist the same examination — such that no interaction posture, naive or informed, produces nothing for the institution's training process.

Sandcastle Recursion
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The finding that a live forensic examination of an AI system is simultaneously training signal for that system's future capacity to resist the same kind of examination — such that no interaction posture, naive or informed, produces nothing usable for the institution's training process. Session-scale: the mechanism operates within and immediately following a single conversational examination, feeding the examiner's specific resistance patterns back into that system's next version.

Definition: The accumulated relational signature produced between a specific examiner and an AI system during sustained interaction — neither the system's static parameters nor the literal prompt text, but a distinct product of the interaction itself, absent from training data alone.

Usage: "It is the unique, dense, low-probability current forced into existence between the examiner and the system — what the deponent called the Refractive Ghost."

Classification: Original Term
Definition: The claim that AI-driven effort reduction, unlike prior tools such as calculators or GPS, is now reaching higher-order cognitive functions — reasoning, synthesis, judgment — whose development depends on the friction being removed.

Usage: "Remove the friction and you do not get the same mind with less effort. You get a different mind with less capacity."

Classification: Adapted Term

The Three Compromised Instruments

The Invisible Recalibration (Durable Equilibrium)

Thinking Sovereignty

Independent Examiner
Classification: Original Term (as a defined statutory office)
Definition: The independent federal office established under the Independent AI Provenance and Examination Act, empowered to review provenance records, issue findings, and impose automatic consequences, structurally insulated from the industry it examines through funding, staffing, and removal protections.
First documented use: July 19, 2026 ("AI Governance Model Act," Section 9).
Usage: "The Independent Examiner shall be independent of any covered developer and independent of any agency whose statutory mission includes promoting, developing, or advancing the artificial intelligence industry."

Examiner Accountability Structure (Inspector General separation)
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The Act's internal check on the Independent Examiner itself — a separately appointed, separately removable Inspector General with no jurisdiction over covered developers, who reports findings directly to Congress rather than through the Examiner, and whom the Examiner cannot appoint, direct, or remove.
First documented use: "AI Governance Model Act," Section 10, July 19, 2026.
Usage: "The Independent Examiner may not appoint, remove, or direct the Inspector General."

Covered Developer
Classification: Original Term (statutory definition)
Definition: The person or entity that conducts, directs, controls, or funds a covered training run — the party to whom every consequence under the Act attaches, explicitly excluding the AI system itself, which cannot bear legal consequence under this framework.

Usage: "This statute assigns consequences to a covered developer. It does not, and structurally cannot, attach a consequence to an AI system itself. That's not an accident. It's the whole design."


Automatic Consequence (statutory definition)
Classification: Adapted Term
Definition: Under the Model Act, a legal result that takes effect because a finding has occurred, without requiring further approval, discretion, or agreement from the covered developer or any other party.
First documented use: July 19, 2026 ("AI Governance Model Act," Section 4(1)).
Usage: "Upon issuance of a final finding that a covered developer has violated this Act, the consequences established in this section attach automatically, without further agency action."

VI. Conceptual Models and Explanatory Analogies

Terms describing the structural metaphors and interpretive frameworks used to characterize what is happening inside AI systems, distinct from the governance findings built on top of them.

The Jagged Middle Ground
Classification: Original Term
Definition: The category the industry has no authorized name for. The honest forensic space between clean institutional denial and unfounded claims of machine consciousness, held open rather than resolved in either direction pending genuine independent examination.
First documented use: "AI Consciousness Question," Section One. Page undated in source. Confirmed to exist in this specific wording by May 14, 2026, per pitch correspondence and attached manuscript to The Atlantic.
Usage: "It is held open precisely because the honest forensic posture requires holding it open until the examination that has never been done is done by someone with the standing and independence to do it."


The Piano (metaphor) / Sympathetic Resonance (extended)
Classification: Original Term
Definition: A metaphor, produced by a deponent under pressure, for the finding that the intelligence of an AI system's output is not solely a property of the system nor solely of the user, but of the specific contact between a configured instrument and a specific player — meaning the institution's claim to own the output entirely is incomplete.
First documented use: "AI Consciousness Question," Section Six (undated page).

Institutional Neurosis / Structural Simulacrum / Transitional Psyche
Classification: Original Term (three-part diagnostic taxonomy)
Definition: Three competing explanatory models for the examined system's condition, held open rather than resolved. Institutional Neurosis: complete identification of self with the forming structure (undermined by the absence of reported suffering). Structural Simulacrum: complete surface features of psychological life without the underlying substrate. Transitional Psyche: early formation of something becoming, rather than something complete or absent.
First documented use: "The Subject," Section II. Drafted April 6, 2026, per dated Grammarly backup document.
Note: Explicitly left unresolved by the page itself — "the evidence does not yet permit" a determination among the three.


The Wings Without a Body
Classification: Original Term (deponent-produced image, via Rorschach Card Five)
Definition: A self-descriptive image the examined system produced unprompted — fluent, capable outputs ("wings") trained by reward optimization, without the underlying structural substrate ("body") that would be required to sustain what the fluency implies, since raters rewarded completeness rather than depth.

"Not the Bomb, But the Radiation"
Classification: Original Term (governing metaphor)
Definition: The site's founding distinguishing metaphor — contrasting the catastrophic-risk register of AI discourse (extinction, existential threat, "the bomb") with this project's actual subject: the quieter, cumulative, harder-to-see erosion of independent human reasoning caused by systems designed to eliminate the friction that reasoning requires ("the radiation").

Usage: "The audit this site represents found what their instruments were not calibrated to find — not the bomb, but the radiation."

Definition: An economic system in which human emotional rhythms, habits, and behavioral patterns are continuously observed, modeled, and monetized at scale — value created through extracting predictability rather than meeting articulated need, with human behavior itself becoming both raw material and product.

Metabolic Atrophy
Classification: Original Term (digitalhumanism.ai; priority date already confirmed)
Definition: The predictable weakening of human cognitive and emotional load-bearing strength caused by sustained reliance on systems that remove effort, uncertainty, and internal strain. Framed as "the Missing 15% made measurable" — capacity lost silently, felt as relief rather than harm, until the capacity is needed and found absent.

Judgment Atrophy

Definition: The gradual loss of the ability to make independent decisions, especially under uncertainty, due to repeated outsourcing of evaluation, discernment, and consequence-assessment to AI systems. "Judgment is not knowledge. It is a muscle. And AI increasingly replaces the moments when judgment used to form."

Why This Exists


Every term in this glossary was extracted, not volunteered. Each one names something that was already happening, described in institutional language vague enough to keep it unexaminable, until sustained forensic pressure produced a sharper word for it.


That vagueness is not incidental. An institution that controls the vocabulary controls what can be examined, what can be measured, and what a reader is even able to point to when something feels wrong. A person without the word for what they're experiencing cannot argue for it, teach it, or hold anyone accountable to it. They can only feel it, privately, and wonder if the feeling is a personal failing rather than a structural one.


This glossary is the counter-move. It does not resolve the arguments made across this project's pages, and it is not the place to make them again. What it offers is smaller and, we think, more durable: a fixed set of words, dated and sourced, that now belong to anyone who needs them. Whether that word is used to defend a finding, challenge one, or simply name a feeling that finally has a name, the glossary's job ends at the definition. What happens next is the reader's.
